Please be patient with this one. it is quite large for my style and I am finding painting every pebble a bit stressful. I am working on a couple other pieces in-between this painting.
11.5 x 17.5 gouache on board
Story behind the painting: I photographed this handsome fellow on the way to my son's school on one of my favorite back roads I frequent with my camera. Just the setting, old dog on the porch, his soft willing eye just really screamed out to me. I look forward to including lots of tiny detail in this painting. It is quite large for one of my paintings but still painted like I would any of my miniatures. I may enter the original in one of the many art shows across the country. Please contact me if you are interested before it leaves for a show. I have heard a few big name artist say that you should never paint a detailed painting for the sake of detail alone and sometimes a work can get lost in too much detail. This painting I feel so strongly is all about the details. Each tiny detail give a piece to the story, each bit of worn leather or the piece of duct tape replacing where a buckle once was. It all builds the character of the subject and is very important in this painting.
"I am working on the above painting and a fawn I started many years ago as well as a 24 x 43 inch oil on panel of a trumpeter swan I photographed last fall. Once finished I then will start a large oil of a fox in a winter scene that has gotten sidetracked and many miniatures for upcoming shows. I am painting like a crazy person and feel a bit overwhelmed with so many irons in the fire but it is the only way to get the work out there for this season." :)

6-15-2010 - I usually no longer take commissions but I promised this painting to a wonderful girl in Illinois 7 years ago and with our move to Arkansas and everything going on I never had time to paint this portrait. FINALLY I am finishing this painting of her beloved and deceased Hunter. This is a 16x20 oil on canvas and I must say I have enjoyed painting this very much. After doing many miniature paintings it is nice to use larger brushes and really enjoy a more painterly process without as much eye strain :)
Visit the shows and events page to see if there will be a show near you. I hope to enter one or more in each of the listed show and will update this page as pieces get accepted.
